skip to content stopping the daily grind a personal finance blog menu home about me contact are you a good investor? i just turned 33 years old and i finally realized i have been a terrible investor up to this point in my life. totally horrible. i’ve been a good saver, just not a great investor. certainly not for a lack of effort, i just would have been better off in index funds. i realized that warren buffett was right, 99% of people should not try to actively invest by picking individual stocks, bonds, etc. they should setup an automatic withdrawal and transfer system (weekly or monthly from your checking or savings account into an investment account) and continually invest the bulk of their disposable savings into index funds with low fees and nearly forget about them. by letting your investments grow for years and decades, mostly stress free, you will avoid many of the emotional pitfalls stock pickers make. i have been actively picking stocks in a taxable brokerage account for the last 12 or so years (thankfully my 401k and roth ira are in index funds). and i always thought that if i put enough effort in, i could pick stocks that would outperform the market. i was wrong. i made a comedy of errors. you name it, i made it. from trying to pick penny stocks, to trading too frequently and being impatient. i just kept shooting myself in the foot. luckily, i somehow managed to keep my investments in positive territory over this time period but i would have been much better off in an index fund that tracked the s&p500 or total stock market index like ticker: vti. i think it took so long for me to finally admit this was the case because i love the subject of investing and i was willing to put much more effort, research, and thought into it than most do. but i have to swallow my pride and admit the truth – i could have earned a lot more and saved a bunch of time by just sticking with simple index funds. when you pick individual stocks a whole bunch of factors can work against you – mostly emotional. this can lead to panic trading in and out too frequently, second guessing your decisions made, or thinking you’ve found a better opportunity elsewhere. this, of course, racks up trading fees. it can become very time consuming too – reading endless articles about the companies in question. not to mention taxes – short term capital gains are taxed much higher than long term. the end result after taxes is very often an investment return that is lower than the market average. bottom line is – most people are much better off passively investing the bulk of their savings in low cost index funds. the irony is that this is much easier and takes almost no time whatsoever, and yet you are almost guaranteed to get the best possible returns. the great news is that there are many terrific companies out there right now that offer exactly this. vanguard , betterment , & wealthfront are my top 3 favorites – all offer great platforms to index investing with very low fees. for those that are very interested in selecting individual stocks and securities, i do believe it has a place. the market is not always efficient and greater returns can be found for the patient and intelligent investors out there. plus, i find it enjoyable to do the research. but, and this is a huge but, like any trade or craft, you need a lot of practice and knowledge before you become a good investor and have any chance of beating the averages. at least 5-10 years experience in my opinion. if you are young or just getting started, you definitely want to put at least 90% into index funds. the other 10% you can try out your stock picking abilities. i can tell you right now though, the biggest hurdles you will encounter are all going to be emotional. and the best odds of beating the market are to select high quality companies and hang on to those shares for a very long time (+10 years at a minimum). although the best way to learn is through trying and making mistakes, my goal is to help others avoid the same easily avoidable mistakes i made and save some heartache along the way. good luck out there investors!! author marvmador posted on may 28, 2018 may 28, 2018 categories investment leave a comment on are you a good investor? how i’m going to “retire” in a year i’m going to “partially-retire” one year from now. for starters, i’m 32 years old. and no, i’m not a trust fund baby, wall street exec, or crypto-currency guru. the opposite in fact, i work in the construction industry. pretty average dude. then how the hell am i going to pull this off? and why? that is why i started this blog. to share my interest in personal finance and early retirement topics and hopefully help others get out of the endless daily grind they feel themselves stuck in. for the easy part, why? because i hate work. just kidding (kinda). to be honest, i actually like working. what i don’t like, is working because i feel like i have to. i hate the hours-long, traffic-filled commute every day and the +60 hour work weeks. i hate the feeling of being “owned” by the company i work for. i hate looking forward to my measly 2 weeks vacation each year. what i really want is financial independence. enough financial security that i can quit my day job and at least partially live off the investment principal and interest. i say partially because i still want to work after my early retirement and have every intention to. i don’t like the term “early retirement” because it implies that i’m just going to sit around and go fishing every day (although not a bad idea some days). the difference is that the work i do will be by choice. my own terms. i’d like the freedom to work as many or as little hours a week as i want. i’d like to never sit in a 2 hour traffic commute again, if possible. and if i decide one day i want to take a month off to travel or volunteer, i can. it’s all about flexibility and freedom. the principles behind achieving this goal are not difficult to understand and have been known for many years. where most people go wrong in achieving various levels of financial independence, is in the execution. and don’t get me wrong, it can be tough. you have to be very disciplined and dedicated to this pursuit. but it is very doable for the average person. most people know it’s generally a good idea to save and invest your money and live well below your means. however, most of america doesn’t. they are too busy trying to keep up with the jones’s and buying the latest $80,000 suv, overpriced home, or other discretionary items that bring little to no long term happiness or wealth, but depletes all your disposable income (think excessive bar tabs or shopping spree’s). so the general strategy for obtaining financial independence (fi) is to maximize your income and minimize your expenses as much as possible, at the same time. then invest all that savings. the more you save and invest as a percentage of your income, the quicker you will become financially independent. a savings rate of 50% or better, is very good. mr. money mustache has a great article on how simple the math is here . the great news is you don’t need to make millions of dollars to become fi. you just need to save a large percentage of your income and invest it. the bonus is, the less you spend, the less you need saved up and the quicker you can reach fi! basically, most people fail to become financially independent because they consume too much and don’t save and invest enough for whatever reasons. whether we recognize it or not, this is why the average person has to work until they are in their 60’s and even then, often don’t have enough saved up for retirement. i think about this topic a lot and i just can’t do the daily grind for another 30 years. i don’t want to wake up one day at age 65 wishing i had done more with my life. i will try to elaborate much more in future articles, but my general strategy for this year is to attack both fronts. increase my income and slash my e
